A little bit about the grid system…
The best way to control the structure of a layout and to deliver a consistent and organized design is to implement a grid system. A grid contains invisible lines that hold a design together. Even when elements are physically separated from each other, something invisible connects them together. The use of grid systems can make the UI design process easier. Regardless, grids are usually designed without much hassle. What most designers don’t realize is that it’s better to create a grid system that is subordinate to the content. It is important to follow trends and always be up to date.
Content type is also an important factor. There is a big difference between designing content for stores, newspaper articles or blogs and splash pages. So it is important to use templates and distinguish between different types of content.
The more you understand the concept of business content and all the limitations in advance, the easier it will be to choose a grid system and make a smarter decision.
Basic Terminology
- Columns- the grids system is made of columns, vertical elements which are the exact same size
- Gutters- the spaces in between the columns, and you can make that space as big or small as you need, depending on your project
- Margins- an empty area on the right and left side
